Mineral Makeup History

Mineral makeup did not just appear out of nowhere or is just a recent discovery. Although, mineral makeup is still not mass produced, it is increasingly getting popular among women. Since most people nowadays are paying more attention to their chemical intake and its effects on the body, there is now a trend on healthy lifestyle.

Actually, the use of minerals can be traced back into the time of ancient Egyptians. Egyptians take pride on their appearance. For them to be close to their gods, they need to be beautiful.

What kind of mineral do they use for their makeup?

Their eye makeup was mostly consisted of malachite, green ore of copper and kohl. Galena is also used for the eyes. This eye makeup also served as eye protectors from the hot and reflective rays of the sun in the desert. Their red lips would come from the red ochre. The same minerals are used for giving color to the cheeks. Each mineral used would come from a different place. Malachite came from the Nile valley, while galena would come from upper Egypt and the Red Sea.

Early Egyptians also believed that makeup is not only means of attaining higher spirituality, they are also used for practical reasons. Malachite and galena are both used as eye protectors. While there are others used for their ability to repel insects and help the body adapt to climate changes. Aside from this, ancient Egyptians believed that black makeup can drive evil sprits away.

Romans did not associate physical appearance to their religious beliefs. But they were already using makeup like lipstick and blush for the cheeks.

Ancient Greeks also used mineral makeup because they wanted to be close to the gods. In Greece, ancient women who belong in the high class rarely go out and get exposed to the sun. That is why women with pale skin are regarded highly, so they started using makeup to make the skin appear pale.

Greek women would use honey and olive oil to keep their skin?s moisture. Olive oil is also a part of their eye enhancement make-up along with charcoal. Lipstick are from mixture of redding and bees wax. This primitive lipstick evolved in ochre clay and red iron, making it a little bit harder and easier to apply to their lips

In the east, Chinese and Japanese were also applying makeup to their faces. Japanese geisha would paint their faces white and outline their eyebrows with charcoal. Actually, this did not happen in Asia only. In Europe, aristocrats would put powders in their faces. The idea is that this would separate them from the common, working class.

The 19th century signalled a different approach to cosmetics. Since pale complexion is a symbol of aristocracy, more men and women are trying to look pale. They would use hydroxide carbonate which unfortunately, has negative and toxic effects on the body. Later on , zinc oxide replaced the toxic substance.

Aside from class distinction, makeup was started to be used to get a younger look. This helped them deceive people of their true age. Powdered paper became popular. They were used with the same purpose of current powders, they were used to remove the shine.

World War II slowed the manufacturing and development of makeup. There are more important things that these items. But after the war, the cosmetic industry started to recover and never looked back. More and more women, and also men, started to purchase cosmetics to improve and enhance their physical features.

During the 1970s, a different trend started to materialize. Mineral makeup which consists pure and fine minerals were applied straight to the face. This mineral makeup did not undergo any chemical process which would inject chemicals and preservatives. Until now, this industry is continually growing.

How to Use Mineral Makeup Foundation

Foundation is the most important thing to put on your face before applying lipstick or any other cosmetic. If you want to look good using mineral makeup foundation, here are the steps that you should follow.

First, get the best shade of mineral makeup foundation there is in the store. To do that, you have to choose the color that matches the color of your skin. Just to give you an idea, some brands classify their shades by fair, fair/light, light, light/medium, light medium/medium, medium, medium deep and deep.

Once you bring it home, go to the bathroom and then clean your face thoroughly using either soap or a facial cleanser. After washing, pat yourself dry with a soft towel.

Now comes the fun part. Open the mineral makeup foundation and before dipping it using your finger or a brush, tap the side of the container first. Right after, dip in the brush, swirl it a bit and then tap it on the side to remove any excess powder.

With a sufficient amount of powder in the brush, this is when you buff the mineral makeup into your skin. Do this gently in circular motions up and down your face. Put more attention under the eyes because this spot is often overlooked and when you are done, apply other makeup products so you add the finishing touches to your face.

If you are going to use some eye shadow, dip the brush into the mineral makeup powder then sweep this onto the eye from the base of the eyelashes to just beneath the brow.

You can also do the same if you are going to put on lipstick by dipping the lip brush into the powder to give a natural look when you finish.

For those who are not happy after applying blush to their face, you can fix this by mixing it with a bit of mineral makeup powder or by applying a second coat on top of the cheeks where the blush was applied.

Applying mineral makeup foundation and using the other stuff can be done in less than 5 minutes. You just need to practice a bit especially if you have always been traditional cosmetics.

The nice thing about mineral makeup foundation is that you don?t have to put too much on your face to get the desired effect. If it is warm, you don?t have to worry that it will run because this is one of the features of this product.

This means that you only need to apply this once a day and if you are too tired to remove this before you go to bed, don?t worry because you don?t have to do this before going to sleep.

When you buy mineral makeup foundation from the store, look at the ingredients written in the label, its volume and the price. If you think that everyone uses the same materials and sells it a little higher or lower than their counterparts, your basis of buying should be based on the net content as this will tell you how much powder is in each bottle.

If you are happy with the mineral makeup foundation of your choice, stick to it until maybe something better comes along.

How to Buy Mineral Makeup Products

Mineral makeup products have taken the market by storm. Sadly, a lot of companies are also getting into it even if some do not use all natural ingredients in making their merchandise. This is why you should be careful when you go shopping and here are a few things you should know when you go and buy these products.

First, find out what brands sell mineral makeup. If you don?t know where to start, ask your dermatologist or do some research online. It will be helpful to ask know how much each one costs and then compare their prices. Should a company offer a 30 day free trial, sign up so you can test it for yourself.

Next, check the ingredients. Mineral makeup products should be made of natural ingredients. If you find something written that you have never heard of before, again do some research to find out where it comes from or ask your dermatologist. Keep in mind that some of these ingredients can be a skin irritant or at worse a toxin and in any case, you don?t want this to get on your skin.

Some of the ingredients the mineral makeup product you are looking at must have are mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and coloring agents like ultramarine blue or ferric ferrocyanide. If it has bismuth, bismuth oxychloride or talc, forget about it because these are examples of skin irritants. Parabens on the other hand have been linked to breast cancer and premature skin aging so avoid it as well since the purpose of putting on makeup is to look younger and radiant.

Mineral makeup comes in different colors especially for stuff like the eye shadows and a lot more. The beauty of mineral makeup is that it makes people think you are not wearing makeup so before you buy it, find out which one matches your skin tone. So be sure that the shade you choose is not too dark or too light making it so obvious that are wearing makeup.

So you get what you pay for, don?t pay attention to the size of the container but the net weight of the product. Sometimes, you will only find less than 5 grams of foundation inside a 20 or even 30 gram container and that means you are paying so much for very little.

Once you have done research on the brand, you can now buy these from the department store, retail store or online. Be sure to check on the company?s refund policy if you are not happy with the product so you can get your money back.

If you like one mineral product from one brand and find something else in another, forget about buying the kit because you won?t use it. Be practical because in these hard times, you can?t afford to waste money but rather maximize it.

As you can see, it is not that hard to buy mineral makeup products. It is just like buying any other product you want from the store but since this could affect your skin, you should just be a little more careful.

The proper way to use mineral makeup is by buying the right brush. You should buy a fan or powder brush and if this is not available, you can also use cotton.
